How Toddler Bedding Can Help Your Toddler Transition Into a New Bed

Posted by TinyTotties on April 03 2010

Transitioning your toddler into a “big-kid bed” is not something you should take lightly. If you think it’s no big deal, remember how poorly you often sleep in an unfamiliar bed in a hotel room! People are creatures of habit, and this applies to young people just as much as it applies to grownups – and even more so.

There are usually two major issues when moving a toddler to a new bed:

  1. In many cases, the toddler has just started to consistently sleep through the night. The last thing you want is to disrupt his sleep patterns.

  2. Almost always, the need to move the toddler to a new bed arises when there’s a sibling on the way. This creates a delicate situation, because to the toddler, it could easily seem as if the new addition to the family is kicking him out of his bed.

Obviously, you want the transition to be as smooth as possible and to minimize sleep disruption and jealousy.

There are several ways to smooth the transition to a toddler bed. We have discussed those in detail in a previous blog post. They include placing the new bed at the same spot as the crib, using toddler bedding that looks like the old bedding, making a big deal about him being a “big boy” (works with some kids but could also backfire), and – of course – being very, very patient!

Today, I’d like to focus on how toddler bedding can help your toddler transition to a “big-kid bed.” The best thing about toddler bedding is that you can make sure it looks exactly like your child’s old crib bedding. In fact, while some toddler bedding designs are exclusive to toddler bedding, many of the designs we carry (the Zebra by Sweet Jojo Designs, for example) are offered in both the crib bedding line and in the zebra toddler bedding line.

This is really helpful for a reluctant toddler, because even though he is moving to a new and different bed, possibly even to a new room, the familiar look and feel of the bedding will be very comforting and will make the transition much easier.

In fact, when you look for toddler bedding, we highly recommend that you purchase a set or two with the same design as the old crib bedding. After a while, when your toddler has fully adjusted to his new bed, you can certainly have fun with new designs – your toddler will like that too – but for the first couple of months, it would be best to keep everything as familiar as possible.

We love zebra bedding sets because they are fun. They make your girl’s bedroom appear cute and girly, yet modern and sophisticated. Girls of all ages – including pre-teens and teens - love this pattern, and parents love it too because it is so easy and versatile.

The Pink Zebra Bedding Set by Sweet Jojo Designs features a contemporary zebra print fabric paired with a vivid pink solid to create a graphic, modern look. The zebra print makes it stylish, and the bold pink border softens the look to make it appropriate for a girl’s bedroom.

We like pairing this bedding set with the fabulously chic zebra print decorative pillow and with the Pink Zebra Accent Floor Rug.
